Testing Methodologies Explained
Considered the absolute gold standard for bacterial infections like Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. PCR works by amplifying and detecting the actual DNA of the pathogen.

A highly sensitive blood test used primarily for viral infections (HIV, Hepatitis, Syphilis). It detects antibodies or antigens using chemical light emission.

A quick, cost-effective screening tool used for initial detection of antibodies or antigens (e.g., HIV, Syphilis).
Gram's stain is a very rapid, low-cost swab test. It is only effective and recommended for symptomatic males who have active urethral discharge. If a Gram's stain detects "Gram-negative intracellular diplococci", it is a highly accurate, definitive positive for Gonorrhea, allowing for immediate treatment on the same day. For asymptomatic patients, or for all female patients, a PCR DNA test is mandatory for an accurate diagnosis.
Who Should Get Tested?
Routine screening is essential. You should book an STD panel if you fall into any of these categories:

What is the difference between a screening test and a confirmatory test?

If a screening test returns positive, a confirmatory test is usually performed to ensure the result wasn't a false positive before starting treatment.
Can STDs be completely cured?
Bacterial STDs (like Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis) can be completely cured with the correct antibiotics provided by a doctor. Viral STDs (like HIV, Herpes, and Hepatitis B) cannot be fully "cured", but they can be highly managed with modern antiviral medications, allowing you to live a normal, healthy life and suppress the virus so it cannot be transmitted.
Can I test for Gonorrhea or Chlamydia using a swab instead of urine?
While swabs were traditionally used (and are still used for Gram's stain if active discharge is present), Urine PCR is now the clinical gold standard. It is completely painless, non-invasive, and highly accurate for both men and women.
What is a 'false negative' and why does the window period matter?
A false negative occurs when you have an infection, but the test comes back negative. This usually happens because the test was taken too soon after exposure (during the "window period") before your body had time to produce detectable antibodies or before the bacteria multiplied enough to be detected. Waiting out the window period ensures an accurate result.
How and when will I get my results?
